Good news for a change

December 12, 2007 · 57 Comments

Dodgit.com has been rock solid for me since 12/11. I made some changes that reject a huge amount of incoming spam and reliability has increased dramatically.

I’m getting emails within a couple of seconds now. Let me know in the comments if you are seeing any delays.

Dodgit up and down like a yo-yo

November 30, 2007 · 4 Comments

You may have noticed that dodgit has been up and down like a yo-yo since 11/14 when the new server went into place. I’ve seen some problems with Postfix and mysql that are hosing everything sporadically. These problems are fixable, and will be fixed when I get a little time for my dodgit hobby.

Expect the problems to continue until I make some changes. Watch this blog for the update.

NOTE: those of you who have made a donation have a backup that is always up–contact me if you don’t know your login.

Down again

November 6, 2007 · 5 Comments

Hi folks – dodgit.com is down again. I’m trying to get some new hardware ready to go and shipping off to the data center this week. Dodgit should be back up and running by 11/13. Sorry for the delays!

update: fedex.com tells me the data center received the server today and it should be up by Wed 11/14.

Dodgeit is dead, long live Dodgit!

July 20, 2007 · 43 Comments

Effective immediately dodgeit.com is now dodgit.com. It was simply no longer possible to support the millions of messages a day dodgeit received on a single server, so I simply switched the domain name.

Please Use: dodgit.com

If you made a donation to the old dodgit, all is not lost! I have legacy support for your old account up and running at: private.dodgeit.com. Use your old login and pass and let me know if you can’t get in.

If you desperately need access to an old dodgeit account but never made a donation, send me an email at roger -at- tarponcreek -dot- com. Please include the mailbox name in your message. I’m a reasonable guy. It helps to ask nicely :-)

I’m getting messages pretty much instantly on the new dodgit, let me know if your experience is different.

Hey folks – dodgeit has had yet another hardware failure and it will take me a week or so to fix things. Sorry for the trouble. We should be up and running by 7/15/07.

If you made a donation and aren’t happy with the service, let me know and I’ll give you a refund!

update: sorry – looks more like Thurs 7/19

Not receiving mail for the moment

March 21, 2007 · 30 Comments

Hi folks – quick update. Dodgeit.com is not receiving mail for the moment. The hosting experiment with Amazon’s EC2 has not been a success. I really like some things about EC2, but apparently it is not a great way to host an extremely busy mail server (which is, of course, what dodgeit is). EC2’s 4GB primary partition is way too small, and the 180GB /mnt disk space is way too slow (because it is a SAN?). Don’t blame Amazon–It is quite possible I was using it for something for which it was never intended.

I expect to have everything moved to a new server by Friday 3/24.

Note: mail shouldn’t be lost. Well-behaved mail servers (they DO exist) will attempt to re-send the messages when the dodgeit SMTP service comes back up.

Sorry for the dodgeit.com downtime

February 8, 2007 · 53 Comments

Hi folks – sorry about the downtime. Dodgeit had a hardware failure and it has taken a while to get up and running again–mostly because I have been busy with my day job. All the free mail was lost (it is disposable, right?) but those of you who donated should have all your old messages.

I’ve temporarily moved dodgeit to Amazon’s EC2 hosting environment, which has been a fun project. I’ll keep an eye on performance for the next few weeks to see if this is a long-term solution.

One more thing which should definitely help, I’ve moved the blog to a subdomain at blog.dodgeit.com (hosted at wordpress.com) so I can get the news out even when the main dodgeit site is down.
