Hi folks - sorry about the downtime. Dodgeit had a hardware failure and it has taken a while to get up and running again–mostly because I have been busy with my day job. All the free mail was lost (it is disposable, right?) but those of you who donated should have all your old messages.
I’ve temporarily moved dodgeit to Amazon’s EC2 hosting environment, which has been a fun project. I’ll keep an eye on performance for the next few weeks to see if this is a long-term solution.
One more thing which should definitely help, I’ve moved the blog to a subdomain at blog.dodgeit.com (hosted at wordpress.com) so I can get the news out even when the main dodgeit site is down.

It’s nice to see that Dodgeit is back on track.
(The service is awesome!)
David // February 9, 2007 at 3:18 pm
How much bandwidth and storage do you use in a month? Eventually I may run a server and could host you for cheap/free. Reply in the blog. This is a cool service and I’d like to see it kept running.

i was wondering has all the emails been deleted due to the downtime?
also i have just donated for my dodgeit account

Elliot Yates // February 24, 2007 at 7:40 am
Hey,
Glad Dodgeit is back. I saw that you have moved to Amazon. What are they like. i was browsing their offered packages, though their wording is puzzling. The prices seem great, could you please tell me what they are like and how much you use etc..?
Thanks,
Elliot

Great work : )
Emily // February 24, 2007 at 11:09 am
WTH is Dodgeit?
regli // February 24, 2007 at 2:34 pm
I enjoy dodgeit and registered with you. However, DTD gives me a problem in RSS in both Yahoo Pipes and IE7. Could you address this issue?
regli // February 24, 2007 at 2:53 pm
In fact, I was able to get IE7 to support the feed through Pipes but the content of the email gets stripped away.
Elliot Yates // February 24, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Hello Emily.
Dodgeit is an anonymous email company. They provide “disposable” (and paid *yey*) email solutions for people who do not wish to give their normal email address to companies who may spam them.
It is a great site, and really useful ! Give it a try!
Thanks,
Elliot
*PS - Plz someone answer my previous post*

Thank you for this wonderful service.
Els // February 28, 2007 at 10:22 am
is still doesnt work for me - it keeps saying
“dude, where’s my database?
Error: Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock’ (2)”
is that MY problem or a dodgeit.com problem??
Sten // February 28, 2007 at 11:50 am
Yeah.. same here - not working.
dodgeitblog // February 28, 2007 at 12:48 pm
Els and Sten - thanks for the comments. I think dodgeit is back up and running again. Credit a 4GB partition on my EC2 server that filled up way faster than I thought it might.

Site is extremely sluggish…like it is experiencing a DDoS attack. dodgeit.com used to be really fast and snappy, but it sort of slowed down as people found out about it.
Have you thought about open-sourcing your website in some form? That way people could use the code to create replication sites, which could then optionally be subdomains of dodgeit.com. Some could be public subdomains, others private. You’d have to run regular scrapes of the subdomains to make sure no one was breaking the rules (i.e. no script changes). But this would allow you to distribute the load to other servers. What was it - some company called bluedigital (or something like that) went under due to a massive DDoS because some spammer didn’t like the company. If you diversify across multiple hosts, it will make it really hard to take dodgeit.com down in the event of a DDoS.
PyHedgehog // March 8, 2007 at 2:08 am
Site is deadly slow. I’m just found this site, so can’t compare. Can somebody tell me - it’s “normal” behaviour, or result of some events?
PyHedgehog // March 8, 2007 at 4:33 am
BTW: It’s bad style to create item in RSS feed to show that there are no items. RSS is for parsing, not for reading, so no items is enough identification.
David Hunter // March 8, 2007 at 4:59 am
You appear to be down again, though you are probably aware of that…
Hope you are up and running soon.
David

Extremly slow, then get this…
dude, where’s my database?

IYAMWHATIYAM // March 9, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Sent some test e-mails to myself, but none of them came through… Must have gotten lost on the internet?
Help! Where are all my e-mails going?
Lou // March 9, 2007 at 6:43 pm
Good News!!!
Just checked & looks like it’s back to it’s normal fast service, and mail hasn’t been lost.
Tooncis // March 12, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Down again, but you probably know that.
Based on the posts here, it’s going up and down.
Good luck with the hardware failure fix and re-hosting.
Sten // March 12, 2007 at 3:28 pm
down again

Daku Daku // March 12, 2007 at 5:05 pm
You’d be surprised how many spammers try to register on my forum using @dodgeit.com email addresses. So the spammers are already abusing the philosophy behind dodgeit
logix // March 13, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Looks like it’s down. All I get is the main page (probably in my browser cache) and when I enter my user name, it just keeps requesting data until it times out. I run a ping of the site and it times out with 100% data loss. I hope you’re back up soon.
j P // March 16, 2007 at 1:56 pm
man I really like the service before the ups and down…. like looking at stocks on paper. hope it get’s up again
Kp // March 17, 2007 at 10:42 pm
If its working its soooooooooper slow (more than 3 min so far fetching a mail). This service still active?
wrox // March 20, 2007 at 1:19 am
hmm… can check email, but there is none. attempting to connect to mx for dodgeit.com is rewarded with:
Opening connection to aws.mail.dodgeit.com [216.182.237.232] on port 25
Socket Closed
Wlady2000 // March 20, 2007 at 12:02 pm
Dodgeit is still down, i can’t read the e-mail and I need that for my MySpace profile… I hope you can be online soon! I want to donate to help you, but I’m a schoolgirl and don’t have credit cards…
joe // March 20, 2007 at 11:24 pm
Still no mail being retrieved. I need my mail — hope they’re not being lost…
